Troubleshooting
Start here when a take doesn’t sound the way you expected.
My take has me but no song.
Check that the Your app card names the app your song plays in. Afinar records only the app you chose.
If that app is right, switch Afinar on in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ System Audio Recording Only. Until Afinar has that permission, the Record bar says Turn Afinar on under System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ System Audio Recording Only. with Open System Settings… under it. Your Mac may ask for your password and restart Afinar.
The song meter doesn’t move.
The meter on the Your app card shows the sound coming from your app. If it stays still while the song plays, make sure the song is playing in the app you chose, and not paused or muted in that app. If the song plays in another app, choose that one in the Your app card.
If Afinar can’t reach the app at all, the card says so, for example Afinar can’t record Safari right now. If the app isn’t on your Mac any more, it says Afinar can’t find Safari on this Mac.
If both are right, switch Afinar on in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ System Audio Recording Only. Your Mac may ask for your password and restart Afinar.
It still says Waiting.
Afinar waits for the chosen app’s first sound. Start the song in that app. If you meant to use another app, press Stop, choose it in the Your app card, and press Record again.
The meter isn’t moving when I play.
Setup says No sound yet. and Check your cable and input. when nothing reaches Afinar. Check that the You card shows the input your instrument is plugged into, then the cable and the gain on your interface. A condenser microphone may also need phantom power. With an interface, Using an audio interface goes through it step by step. If you never allowed the microphone, switch Afinar on in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone.
It says No input found.
Afinar can’t find any audio input. A Mac mini or Mac Studio has no microphone of its own, so connect an audio interface or a USB microphone, then choose it in setup or in the You card.
I can’t hear myself.
Switch on Hear yourself in the You card, and use wired headphones. If you left it on and walked away, it switched itself off after 10 quiet minutes. The window says so until you close it or press Record. During a take you can’t switch it on, so turn it on before you press Record.
Mute turned itself off.
If muting can’t keep running, Afinar turns it off, plays the original song, and says why under the mute tiles. Instrument muting couldn’t keep up, so the original is playing. means your Mac couldn’t keep pace. Close other busy apps and choose the instrument again.
Connect an audio output to mute instruments. means Afinar has nowhere to play the song. No sound reached Afinar. The song app is playing normally; instrument muting is off. means the app’s sound never reached Afinar, so check that the song plays in the app you chose. If the line asks you to allow Afinar in System Settings, do that, then quit and reopen Afinar.
If muting stops during a take, the original plays for the rest of that take. Choose the instrument again once the take is saved.
My amp model won’t play.
Afinar plays only models marked Amp + Cab. A model whose row says Needs a cabinet is an amp captured without its speaker, and Afinar has no cabinet stage for it yet. Choose a model marked Amp + Cab instead. If the row says File missing, the model’s file is gone from your Mac, so add it again. Amp models has the rest.
The recorder went away.
You hid it with its × or with Escape. A take keeps going, and the menu bar shows the red dot and the timer. Click the menu-bar icon to bring the recorder back, or press ⌃⌥⌘R to stop.
Video won’t turn on.
The line under the Record bar says why. If you didn’t allow the camera, switch Afinar on in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Camera, or press Open System Settings. With no camera connected, connect one, or use your iPhone as the Mac’s camera.
If you see This Mac’s administrator has turned the camera off for Afinar., whoever manages your Mac has to allow the camera before Afinar can use it.
If a take won’t start with Video on, the Record bar says why in one sentence. Allow camera access in System Settings to record video. means Afinar isn’t switched on in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Camera. Connect a camera to record video. means no camera is connected.
The camera stopped working; choose it again to record video. and The camera couldn’t open; choose it again to record video. mean Afinar lost the camera or couldn’t open it. Choose the camera again, or turn Video off and back on.
The camera didn’t open in time. and The camera couldn’t start. mean the camera didn’t start. Press Record again, or turn Video off to record sound only.
